El 22 de febrero se celebró la final alemana para Eurovisión, donde a pesar de participar quince cantantes, todo el mundo daba por hecho que esta noche en el Ostseehalle de Kiel, la invidente Corinna May se alzaría con la victoria. El programa fue presentado por Axel Bulthaupt.
La televisión alemana decidió que fuese en dos rondas el proceso para seleccionar al representante alemán. En una primera ronda, el televoto decidía las tres mejores canciones que pasarían a la final. Estas fueron "Hold on", "Joy to the world" y finalmente "I can´t live without music".
Una vez conocidas las canciones finalistas, nuevamente el televoto decidió la canción que representaría a Alemania en Tallim.
Entre las caras conocidas en esta final destaca la presencia de Nino de Angelo que representó a Alemania en 1989, Ireen Sheer que representó en dos ocasiones a Luxemburgo en 1974 y 1985 y en una ocasión a Alemania en 1978 y Joy Fleming que representó a los alemanes en 1975.
Corinna May ya había conseguido ganar previamente la final alemana. Fue en 1999 donde se alzó con la victoria con la canción "Hör den Kindern einfach zu" (Sólo escuchen a los niños) pero que posteriormente fue descalificada por que dicha canción la cantó otro cantante meses antes y en el 2000, quedó en segunda posición con "I Believe in God".
